Zimbabwean musician Chief Hwenje, born Admire Sanyanga Sibanda, is recovering after a successful surgery in India for lymphoma, a life-threatening blood cancer affecting his immune system.
At 37, Chief Hwenje recently shared his battle with lymphoma. This condition, where abnormal white blood cells multiply uncontrollably, has been silently affecting him.
The artist’s lymphoma diagnosis includes two possible forms: Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. His health journey has been both challenging and courageous.
Initially planning to receive treatment in South Africa, government intervention redirected Hwenje to India. There, doctors advised surgery over chemotherapy to stop the disease’s spread.
From his recovery bed in India, Hwenje confirmed his surgery was successful. “I’m healing well, and I’m hopeful for a full recovery,” he expressed, showing gratitude for the government’s support.
He credits this support for making his overseas treatment possible and reigniting hope for a life free from pain. He now anticipates returning home soon to continue his healing process.
Once back in Zimbabwe, Hwenje plans to retreat to his rural home to rest fully. His music career is also part of his recovery process, including the release of his upcoming album.
Hwenje’s album, Chiedza chaSamere, was initially set for a December release. However, due to his health struggles, the album’s release has been postponed until next year.
The album features Afro-traditional songs about his personal struggles and resilience. It reflects his career journey, both its trials and triumphs, resonating with his fans.
“My recent months have been full of pain,” said Hwenje. “Despite the agony, I stayed true to my passion and kept performing, even when it meant relying on pain medication that didn’t always work.”
His fans and promoters, unaware of his struggles, will be thrilled to see him return. “I’m excited to bring the same energy to the stage as before,” he added.
A celebrated figure in Zimbabwean music, Hwenje has worked with various artists, including Baba Harare (now King David) and Pah Chihera. He’s also written songs for others in the industry.
The artist’s resilience and commitment to his craft despite his illness inspire many. His journey highlights the importance of support and determination in overcoming life’s challenges.
