The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) faces internal upheaval amid allegations of corruption and divisive leadership moves by interim secretary-general Sengezo Tshabangu.
Reports claim Tshabangu is soliciting bribes from lawmakers desperate to retain parliamentary positions or gain influential roles. These accusations have deepened existing tensions within the opposition party.
Tshabangu’s actions, including orchestrating widespread recalls of CCC legislators, have fractured the party. Many of those targeted stand accused of abandoning party membership, escalating internal discontent.
The fallout has led to dramatic changes in parliamentary leadership. Key figures, such as Chikanga legislator Lynette Karenyi-Kore, were removed and replaced, leaving many party members outraged.
Karenyi-Kore, previously Leader of the House in the National Assembly, was succeeded by Sunningdale MP Maureen Kademaunga in a move critics call politically motivated.
Former Chief Whip Edwin Mushoriwa was also ousted during a controversial reshuffle. This reshuffle has left the opposition struggling to maintain cohesion.
Willas Madzimure, a CCC spokesperson, expressed frustration, labeling Tshabangu’s actions as illegitimate and self-serving. He criticized the influence of money over merit in these decisions.
“These recalls lack legitimacy. They are personal power games. Large sums are being exchanged for positions, eroding trust and damaging credibility,” Madzimure said.
Madzimure condemned the removal of senior legislators, describing it as unjust. He emphasized that many worked tirelessly, even using personal resources, to secure their roles.
“These unjustified recalls are demoralizing. They reflect oppressive practices that we’ve consistently opposed in the ruling Zanu PF,” he added.
The CCC’s leadership crisis extends beyond parliamentary reshuffles. Disputes have arisen over funds allocated under the Political Parties Finance Act, further straining relations.
Attempts to contact Tshabangu’s spokesperson, Nqobizitha Mlilo, for clarification were unsuccessful. Silence from his camp has only fueled speculation and mistrust.
Madzimure warned of dire consequences if the party fails to address its internal issues. He called for unity and a return to principled leadership.
“Our focus must be on restoring order and integrity. We cannot let this chaos define our party’s future,” he stated.
With allegations of corruption and infighting dominating headlines, the CCC’s ability to navigate these turbulent waters remains uncertain. Its next moves will likely shape its political survival.
