Luckson Marowa, a 36-year-old man from Rusape, returned home after seven years in prison, only to face a whirlwind of personal turmoil and complicated family dynamics.
Marowa, who was incarcerated for transporting stolen goods, had served nearly seven years of a 10-year sentence before being released two months ago.
Upon his return, he discovered that his wife, Plaxedes Mushayavanhu, 32, had remarried during his absence. Their 10-year-old child had been left in the care of her parents.
Marowa claims his in-laws have barred him from seeing his child, who was only two years old at the time of his imprisonment.
Adding to his grievances, Marowa revealed that his in-laws are demanding financial compensation for caring for his family during his incarceration, despite his current unemployment.
“I don’t hold a grudge against her remarriage. It’s been a long time,” said Marowa. “But I am deeply concerned about my child’s right to education and access to both parents.”
Marowa expressed frustration that his relatives, who offered to assist with the child’s schooling, were met with hostility. He claims they were attacked with stones when they visited his in-laws.
Plaxedes, now remarried, stated that her parents have been caring for the child. She denied any deliberate attempts to block Marowa’s access but acknowledged tensions between him and her parents.
“My parents have been taking care of the child since I got married,” said Plaxedes. “I don’t think they are against giving him access to the child.”
Esther Masunga, Plaxedes’ mother, admitted that her family has demanded lobola (bride price) and financial reimbursement from Marowa.
Masunga suggested that if Marowa insists on custody, she is willing to send the child to live with him permanently, provided their financial demands are met.
“If he wants his child, I’ll send the child to live with him,” said Masunga. “But he must stop abusing me with his complaints and bitterness over his wife’s remarriage.”
The situation has raised questions about the challenges former prisoners face upon reintegration into society. Marowa’s case underscores the complexities of family dynamics in such circumstances.
Marowa continues to seek access to his child while navigating the demands and animosity from his former in-laws. His path forward remains uncertain amid these unresolved tensions.
