Victoria Falls faces administrative turmoil as councillors aim to reinstate town clerk Ronnie Dube.
The Government has instructed the local authority to reverse Dube’s suspension.
Mayor Prince Thuso Moyo had suspended Dube over allegations of corruption and abuse of office.
This action was taken under Section 29(3) of the Urban Councils Act on December 2.
However, Minister Daniel Garwe criticized the suspension as non-procedural and policy-violating.
He directed the council to reinstate Dube, but meetings to enact this have faltered.
One meeting couldn’t proceed due to a lack of quorum, with only five councillors present.
Another was stalled because the mayor, who holds the ministerial letter, was absent.
Deputy Mayor Lungile Nyoni attempted to lead discussions, but the letter’s content was unknown.
“The letter was sent to the mayor, not the council registry,” Nyoni explained.
Without the mayor or the document, they could not address the reinstatement.
The ministry advised to continue with the deputy mayor chairing in the mayor’s absence.
Nyoni emphasized the need to locate the mayor to move forward with council business.
He stated, “We are waiting for communication from the ministry to proceed.”
The mayor’s whereabouts remained unclear, with rumors of him being away from the city.
Residents expressed frustration over the ongoing administrative disarray.
Hwadra chairperson Herbert Ncube insisted on accountability for local leaders.
Vicfacora’s Kelvin Moyo highlighted the impact on Victoria Falls’ tourism-driven economy.
He stressed, “This isn’t just personal; it’s about serving the public.”
The community watches closely, eager for stability to restore investor confidence.
The reinstatement of Dube hinges on the mayor’s return or a direct ministerial directive.
The situation underscores the challenges of local governance under national oversight.
As Victoria Falls navigates this political quagmire, the city’s future hangs in balance.
The resolution will significantly influence the city’s administrative and economic trajectory.
The community’s patience is tested as they await a resolution to this bureaucratic standoff.
