Wallace Chirumiko, the king of Zimdancehall known as Winky D, has firmly declared his independence from political influence during a vibrant performance at Mbare.
His latest gig was sponsored by Swan Valley Group, highlighting his refusal to be swayed by material gifts.
Winky D aimed sharp lyrics at tenderpreneur Wicknell Chivayo, asserting, “I cannot be bought with a car.”
He sang, “They preach the word of God but they are thieves, open your eyes, I am not bought by a car,” to a roaring crowd.
Chivayo has recently been known for donating cars and money to artists aligned with Zanu PF, attempting to sway their loyalty.
Returning to Mbare after seven years, Winky D’s performance was met with enthusiastic cheers and sing-alongs from the youth.
His music speaks to the struggles and aspirations of young Zimbabweans, making him an icon among them.
Winky D uses his stage presence to address societal issues, and Saturday’s concert was no different.
“I’m holding it firm but I’m not a keeper, I won’t sell out,” he sang, emphasizing his commitment to his artistic integrity.
His lyrics also touched on his ousting from Harare International Conference Centre due to political maneuvering by Zanu PF’s Kudakwashe Tagwirei.
“I left HICC, it’s fine, do your thing, I don’t need notes, I’ve passed 40,” he proclaimed, showcasing his independence.
Chivayo and Passion Java, known for their extravagant spending, were direct targets of Winky D’s lyrical critique.
In 2020, Java tried to lure Winky D with a hefty contract, which he refused, maintaining his stance against such bribes.
Winky D also commented on the tender scandals involving Zanu PF’s Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu, weaving these issues into his performance.
“You are not blind, the goat has been brought back, release the mic,” he sang, in a clever nod to current events.
His response to Seh Calaz’s accusations of being sidelined at shows was met with the same directness, maintaining his narrative control.
The concert featured a lineup of stars like Master H and Aleck Macheso, but it was Winky D who truly captivated the Mbare audience.
