The CCC faction under the guidance of Sengezo Tshabangu is actively preparing for a party congress, although no specific date has been set due to legal entanglements.
Mbuso Siso, a staunch supporter of Tshabangu, explained that the delay in announcing the congress date stems from court battles with Welshman Ncube, the acting CCC leader.
Siso highlighted that the faction’s readiness for the congress is progressing, with meetings held to gauge grassroots support across Zimbabwe, the most recent in Masvingo.
The faction is focused on revitalizing the party with new leadership, with Siso stating, “We are testing our strength from the base, aiming for fresh minds to lead CCC.”
There’s clear friction with Ncube’s leadership, as Siso declared that Ncube no longer holds widespread support within the party, emphasizing the regional origins of the MDC.
Siso clarified the distinct nature of the CCC under Tshabangu’s leadership, formed in 2022, in contrast to the structures used by Ncube from 2019, which were nullified by the court.
He also called for a broad political agreement to smooth out electoral issues before the next elections, echoing the need for reforms akin to past national unity efforts.
Nqobizitha Mlilo, the faction’s spokesperson, confirmed ongoing efforts to restructure the party, focusing on rectifying the opposition’s weaknesses, though specifics on leadership contests remain undecided.
The faction’s push towards a congress, amidst unresolved legal disputes, sets the stage for a significant shift within Zimbabwe’s political landscape.
