Ramaphosa’s Farmgate Scandal: The notorious “farmgate” controversy has been rekindled as three people accused of stealing $580,000 from South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s farm appeared in court. The controversy began in 2020.

The alleged theft had place at the Phala Phala game farm owned by Ramaphosa. When the existence of hidden cash—hidden within a couch—came to light two years later, it caused controversy and political unrest.

Seizing the chance, the opposition parties accused Ramaphosa of breaking foreign currency laws, evading taxes, and laundering money. The political atmosphere in South Africa was rocked by the claims.

Ramaphosa’s political longevity is primarily ascribed to his tactical partnerships. He was able to hold onto power thanks to the ANC’s parliamentary majority, but opposition lawmakers had to provide crucial backing.

Nine opposition parties teamed up in a coalition with the ANC after the ANC lost its 30-year majority in South Africa’s 2023 election. Ramaphosa’s presidency was stabilised by this action.

Still, some critics are dubious. While some contend that the partnership shields Ramaphosa from additional criticism, others view it as a political need to preserve national governance.
