A Mbare Musika security guard accused of causing a devastating fire that resulted in significant property damage was denied bail on Monday.
Action Chakauya, aged 35, appeared before magistrate Artwell Sanyatwa. He will remain in custody until his next hearing, set for November 11.
The State’s case against Chakauya centers on allegations that he recklessly ignited a fire near one of Mbare Musika’s entrances. This incident occurred on October 8.
According to reports, Chakauya started the fire close to the precast security wall outside the market. The fire was allegedly intended to keep him warm during his shift.
Other security guards on duty that night reportedly witnessed Chakauya’s actions. However, they did not intervene in time to prevent the fire from spreading.
What started as a small fire quickly spiraled into an uncontrollable blaze. The flames ravaged the market, destroying property valued at an estimated US$5 million.
The fire’s impact on Mbare Musika, a vital commercial hub in Harare, has been immense. The marketplace serves as a major trading point for vendors and retailers across Zimbabwe.
The market is still grappling with the aftermath, as traders and local businesses assess the damage caused by the fire. The destruction left many without their sources of income.
Prosecutor Janet Mlambo, representing the State, argued that Chakauya’s negligence caused significant financial losses. The court agreed with the State, citing concerns that Chakauya could flee or interfere with investigations if granted bail.
The fire has sparked widespread discussion about security measures at Mbare Musika, with questions raised about fire safety protocols. This case is likely to renew attention to such issues.
Chakauya will remain in custody as investigations continue. His fate now hinges on the evidence that the State will present during his next court appearance.
While this case unfolds, the vendors affected by the blaze continue to face uncertainty, waiting for answers regarding the fire’s exact cause and the full extent of the damage.
