Campaign Seeks $7k to Restore Thomas Mapfumo’s Fire-Razed Domboshava Home

Efforts are underway to rebuild the Domboshava residence of exiled Zimbabwean music icon Thomas Mapfumo after it was destroyed by fire on September 23, 2024.

The campaign, spearheaded by Nehanda Radio’s Managing Editor Lance Guma and Friends of Mapfumo, aims to raise $7,000. Donations will fund construction materials, labor, and logistical expenses.

This initiative highlights Mapfumo’s cultural impact and his unwavering stance against political oppression. Proceeds will support reconstructing the home, with plans to convert it into an arts center.

Mapfumo, a vocal critic of the Zimbabwean government, claims the fire was deliberate. Official reports suggest a veld fire, but the musician believes foul play is involved.

“It’s not possible for that house to have caught fire in the manner it did,” Mapfumo shared, alleging arson orchestrated to deflect attention from its true cause.

At 79, Mapfumo continues to be a symbol of resistance. His Chimurenga music, known for addressing social injustices, has been a cornerstone of Zimbabwean cultural identity for over six decades.

The funds will cover essential items like IBR sheets, asbestos boards, wire nails, screws, and labor costs. Builders have estimated $6,178 for reconstruction, but logistics necessitate additional resources.

“This is about giving back to someone who has fearlessly stood with the people of Zimbabwe through decades of adversity,” Guma stated, emphasizing Mapfumo’s contributions.

The GoFundMe campaign link (https://gofund.me/6e050789) has been shared widely to rally global support. Donations will be handed directly to Mapfumo and his family.

Condemnation of the incident has been widespread, with many viewing it as a targeted attack on Mapfumo’s freedom of expression. Supporters are calling it an assault on his legacy.
