A Zimbabwean man residing in Australia is on the run after allegations surfaced that he raped his 36-year-old lover during their first in-person meeting in Zimbabwe.
Bright Ndinaani Nyanhete, 24, of Borrowdale Brooke, reportedly returned to Zimbabwe from Australia to meet the woman. The pair had communicated online for weeks before his visit.
Their relationship began in September after Bright’s sister, Tarisai Mudzangadza, connected him with the woman through WhatsApp. They quickly developed a romantic connection, according to sources.
The accused allegedly traveled to Zimbabwe in November, expressing his desire to meet the woman and spend quality time together, culminating in their first encounter.
According to police reports, the woman had requested an HIV test before any sexual relations. However, Bright allegedly forced himself on her twice without protection.
The complainant later confided in a friend and subsequently filed a police report. Authorities launched an investigation and issued an appeal for information regarding Bright’s whereabouts.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the incident, describing it as a case involving two lovers. The accused is now evading law enforcement.
Inspector Chakanza detailed that Bright initiated contact with the woman through his sister. He expressed intentions to marry a Zimbabwean woman, leading to their introduction.
Following weeks of communication, Bright flew to Zimbabwe and visited the complainant at her residence. It was during this visit that the alleged crime occurred.
The accused reportedly demanded sexual intimacy during the visit. When the woman declined, citing his unknown HIV status, he allegedly proceeded to assault her.
The police statement revealed the alleged incident took place on November 11, 2024. Days later, on November 13, the woman disclosed the abuse to her friend.
Authorities are urging anyone with information on Bright’s location to assist in the investigation. Reports suggest he is hiding somewhere within Zimbabwe.
The allegations have sparked public outrage, highlighting the complexities of online relationships and the risks of in-person meetings without prior safeguards.
Inspector Chakanza emphasized the importance of bringing the accused to justice. He reiterated that investigations were ongoing and urged the public to remain vigilant.
This case underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in apprehending suspects who abscond. The fugitive’s background and international ties add to the difficulty.
For now, Bright remains at large. The authorities continue to gather evidence while appealing for public cooperation to ensure accountability
