Chunga Defends Car Gift Amid Criticism Over ZANU PF Ties

Football icon Moses “Bambo” Chunga has rejected criticism for accepting a car gift from businessman Wicknell Chivayo, whose connections to ZANU PF have sparked widespread debate.

Chunga, joined by musicians Leonard Karigoka Zhakata and Mai Charamba, faced backlash for accepting vehicles from Chivayo, a figure often associated with controversial dealings.

Speaking at Faramatsi Motors while receiving a Toyota Fortuner from Chivayo, Chunga dismissed claims that accepting the gift reflected poorly on his values.

“There were rumors that Bambo refused the car because of ZANU PF ties. Supporting ZANU PF isn’t a sin. I appreciate this gift and love my country,” he remarked.

Chivayo, a businessman whose wealth remains shrouded in mystery, had earlier announced his intention to gift cars to Chunga and ZBC veteran Charles “CNN” Mabika.

Chunga, who recently returned from Belgium, emphasized his gratitude for the gesture, describing it as recognition of his contributions to football and his enduring influence in Zimbabwe.

Last week, Chivayo extended similar gifts to Mai Charamba, Leonard Karigoka Zhakata, and Mechanic Manyeruke, sparking heated conversations on social media about his motivations.

In a public statement, Chivayo lauded Chunga’s historic football career, highlighting his debut in Belgium as a trailblazer for Zimbabwean athletes on the international stage.

Chivayo praised Chunga’s unique playing style, describing him as a maestro who brought “glamour and style” to Dynamos Football Club during his celebrated career.

“Watching Chunga was mesmerizing. His creativity, vision, and skill redefined football in Zimbabwe. His legacy deserves recognition,” Chivayo posted, emphasizing his admiration for the icon.
