The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has officially released the identities of five victims from the fatal Inter Africa Bus crash on Sunday morning.
The accident occurred at the 330-kilometre mark on Harare-Bulawayo Road. The bus collided with a stationary Freightliner truck at approximately 3:30 AM.
According to the ZRP, the bus was carrying 43 passengers when it slammed into the truck. Seven people lost their lives at the scene, while 22 others sustained injuries.
Six of the injured passengers received treatment and were discharged, but 16 others were taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital for further care.
Among the victims, five have been identified: Mutanga Brian, a male adult from Bocha, Marange; Manyise Madubeko, 45, from 4th Street, Bulawayo; and Ncube Sinqobile, 43, from Xanti Village, Esigodini.
Other identified victims include Muchemwa Matienga, 62, of Lasper Road, Harrisvale, Bulawayo, and Mafukidze Edmen Collin, 39, from Overspill Epworth.
The ZRP confirmed that the identities of two additional victims remain unknown. These individuals have not yet been identified by their families.
In a separate incident, Commissioner Paul Nyathi reported another fatal crash on Sunday at around 1:30 AM. This one occurred along Harare-Wedza Road at the 72-kilometre peg.
A Nissan pick-up veered off the road and collided with a stationary Scania truck. The driver died at the scene, and the passenger was injured in the accident.
The body of the deceased was transported to Marondera Provincial Hospital for a post-mortem. The injured passenger is also receiving medical treatment at the same facility.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly during early morning and night travel. The police also stressed the importance of avoiding speeding.
Motorists are reminded to follow road safety rules, as reckless driving continues to be a leading cause of fatalities on Zimbabwe’s roads.
