Chinhoyi Pastor Charged with Multiple Rapes on Christmas Day

A well-known pastor from Chinhoyi, Lloyd Kanyangarika Karuru, faced court for allegedly raping his in-law repeatedly.

Karuru, the 40-year-old founder of Followers of Christ Church International, was arrested on Christmas Day.

He appeared in Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court after spending two nights in custody following his arrest.

Prosecutor Mutsai Mollen Chitsiga stated there was sufficient suspicion of the pastor’s guilt, necessitating further medical examination of the victim.

The defense, led by Joshua Mangeyi, argued for bail, citing Karuru’s cooperation with police and fixed residence.

Mangeyi contested the speculation on the complainant’s medical status, asserting it was unfair to presume guilt based on this.

He also requested a US$50 bail, highlighting that the complainant and accused do not live together, reducing the risk of interference.

The State suggested doubling the bail to US$100, focusing on ensuring the accused doesn’t abscond or tamper with witnesses.

Magistrate Ignatius Mugova granted Karuru free bail, setting a court return date for January 10, 2025.

The allegations trace back to 2019 when the victim was living with Karuru’s family at Chikonohono’s Staff Quarters.

It’s claimed that Karuru used mobile phone games to create opportunities for sexual assault.

These violations reportedly spanned from 2019 to September 2024, when they finally came to public attention.

The victim underwent a medical examination at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital, with results to be presented in court.
