A well-known pastor from Chinhoyi, Lloyd Kanyangarika Karuru, faced court for allegedly raping his in-law repeatedly.
Karuru, the 40-year-old founder of Followers of Christ Church International, was arrested on Christmas Day.
He appeared in Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court after spending two nights in custody following his arrest.
Prosecutor Mutsai Mollen Chitsiga stated there was sufficient suspicion of the pastor’s guilt, necessitating further medical examination of the victim.
The defense, led by Joshua Mangeyi, argued for bail, citing Karuru’s cooperation with police and fixed residence.
Mangeyi contested the speculation on the complainant’s medical status, asserting it was unfair to presume guilt based on this.
He also requested a US$50 bail, highlighting that the complainant and accused do not live together, reducing the risk of interference.
The State suggested doubling the bail to US$100, focusing on ensuring the accused doesn’t abscond or tamper with witnesses.
Magistrate Ignatius Mugova granted Karuru free bail, setting a court return date for January 10, 2025.
The decision led to jubilation among Karuru’s supporters, who filled the courtroom to show solidarity.
The allegations trace back to 2019 when the victim was living with Karuru’s family at Chikonohono’s Staff Quarters.
It’s claimed that Karuru used mobile phone games to create opportunities for sexual assault.
The pastor allegedly threatened the victim with dire consequences should she reveal the assaults, fearing damage to his personal and professional life.
These violations reportedly spanned from 2019 to September 2024, when they finally came to public attention.
The victim underwent a medical examination at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital, with results to be presented in court.
The State maintains that Karuru’s actions were unlawful, challenging the moral standing of a community leader.
This case has stirred considerable interest, highlighting the complexities of trust and abuse within religious communities.
The outcome of this legal battle could have far-reaching implications for both the church and its followers.
As the trial date approaches, the community of Chinhoyi watches closely, torn between faith in their pastor and the gravity of the accusations.
The case underscores the delicate balance between religious leadership and personal accountability.
Karuru’s arrest on such a significant day casts a long shadow over the festive period’s joy in Chinhoyi.
The court will now determine if this pastor’s actions match the teachings he has preached to his congregation.
