In Harare, a 35-year-old self-proclaimed prophet, Marvellous Tunha, known as Madzibaba Joshua, has been detained for reportedly engaging in sexual activities with a 14-year-old student.
Tunha, who leads the St Joshua Apostolic Church in Glen View’s Churu Farm, was arrested on Sunday, with investigations ongoing into the incidents from October to November.
The allegations detail how Tunha allegedly initiated contact with the minor, proposing intimacy which she accepted, leading to meetings at lodges in Kuwadzana and elsewhere.
Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, Harare’s police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest, highlighting the gravity of the accusations against the church leader.
The case came to light after the victim’s mother grew suspicious of her daughter’s late arrivals home and discovered incriminating messages on her phone.
The turning point came on Unity Day when, during counseling in Marlborough, the girl disclosed the abuse, leading to an immediate police report.
Following the report, Tunha was apprehended, and the minor was sent for medical examination at Sally Mugabe Hospital to document any physical evidence of the abuse.
In a related incident, a 27-year-old from Beitbridge faces legal action for allegedly raping a 14-year-old in a commuter omnibus, showcasing a disturbing pattern of abuse against minors.
This man, whose name has not been disclosed, appeared in court and has been remanded until January 10, 2025, for his trial to proceed.
The incident involving the Beitbridge suspect occurred during a family trip from South Africa, where the victim was left alone in the vehicle, providing the opportunity for the assault.
These cases reflect a troubling trend of abuse by those in positions of authority or trust, underscoring the need for vigilance and protection of the vulnerable.
They serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against child exploitation and the importance of community and familial oversight in preventing such heinous acts.
